    In-service Inspection

    What is ISIS?

Lloyd’s Register EMEA developed its in-service inspection scheme (ISIS) with the Pressure Systems and Transportable Gas Containers Regulations SI1989 No.2169 in mind. The comprehensive scope of ISIS covers all foreseeable potential hazards to ensure compliance with all UK statutory requirements covering pressure systems. This scope has been regularly reviewed and up-dated and takes account of the recent Pressure Systems Safety Regulations SI2000 No. 128 (PSSR) which came into effect in February 2000.

The aim of the PSSR is to prevent serious injury from the hazard of stored energy and it's concerned with pressure systems that contain:

    • steam at any pressure

    • gases which exert a pressure of >0.5 barg

    • fluids which may be a mixture of liquids, gases or vapour, where the gas or vapour phase may exert a pressure >0.5barg.

With the exception of steam, the stored contents’ properties are of concern only to the extent that they may be liable to accelerate wear and cause a more rapid deterioration in the condition of the system, and this may lead to an increased risk of failure. If the contents are highly toxic or part of a major hazard site, this is covered by separate legislation. The duty holders (owners/users) will need to consider any additional hazards e.g. toxicity when deciding precautions required.
